Leveraging Counterplans Strategically

Why are counterplans strategic?
Time tradeoff
Changes focus of the debate
Helps out disads and case arguments

Of Conditionality and Dispositionality…

Types of Counterplans:
1) Agent
2) PICS
3) Process
4) “Utopian”
5) Advantage counterplans
6) Uniqueness counterplans

When do you read counterplans:
1NC
What about 2NC counterplans? Are there conditions which justify 2NC counterplans?

Where?
Offcase position

What do you have to win to win with counterplans:
1) theory debate on legitimacy of your type of CP
2) some risk of a disad (that links to the permutation)
3) probably have to beat back part of the case impact (because inevitably you can’t solve 100% of the case)

You want a counterplan in your strategy–unless it creates such a contradiction that you don’t want to risk running it. Advantage counterplans are incredibly effective because they are less predictable (it opens up the possible research base and increases creativity). However–often advantage counterplans can only solve 1 advantage.
